Barron, an FSU alumnus, will step down from his position at NCAR

The ratio of record highs to record lows may increase dramatically this century.

Earth is vulnerable to streams of solar energy even in the absence of sunspots.

The study provides new evidence that greenhouse gas emissions are overpowering natural climate patterns.

The study can help scientists work toward predictions of certain climate phenomena years in advance.

The show, a new narrative of life's origins called "Journey to the Stars," includes a scientific simulation of sunspots in 3D created at NCAR.

By simulating 8,000 years of climate with unprecedented detail and accuracy, scientists have found a new explanation for the last major period of global warming, which occurred about 14,500 years ago.

New research linking the solar cycle to subtle climate impacts may pave the way toward better weather predictions.

The system will identify and predict rapidly evolving storms and other potential areas of turbulence to enhance the safety of air travel over the oceans.

NCAR scientists will collaborate with Latin American colleagues to assess risks, draw up response plans, and provide training.
Lava from the TEB vent is flowing through tubes that carry lava down-slope to feed active surface flows in two locations on the coastal plain:
(1) Localized lava breakouts on the east side of the flow moving toward Kalapana Gardens have advanced up to 70 m (230 ft) to the east, bringing the flow front to within 4060 m (130200 ft) of the two nearest homes. As of this afternoon, the most active breakouts were filling in a low area to the north of the flow front. Sporadic breakouts were also occurring on the north side of the flow, but the overall northward ...
DI deflation continued and Kilauea eruptive activity continued at two locations. In the east rift zone, lava flowed from the TEB vent through tubes to supply active surface flows in Kalapana that advanced slightly to the north and fed two ocean entries yesterday. The summit eruptive vent within Halema`uma`u Crater hosted a lava pond that produced red glow visible from the Jaggar Museum overnight. Sulfur dioxide emission rates from the summit and east rift zone vents remained elevated.
The summit tiltmeter ...
Lava from the TEB vent is flowing through tubes that carry lava down-slope to feed active surface flows in two locations on the coastal plain:
(1) Observations late this morning revealed only small outbreaks on the north side of the lava that has been advancing toward Kalapana Gardens. The slow advance of flows may be related to an ongoing deflation-inflation cycle, which affects lava supply to the east rift zone.
Most of the lava activity observed today was along flows feeding the two ocean entries located southwest of Kalapana Gardens. Both ocean entries are ...
The earthquake swarm that started on July 15 in Long Valley Caldera ~ 9 miles east of the town of Mammoth Lakes continued through the week, although at a subdued level. Only eight earthquakes between magnitude M=1.0 and M=1.8 were recorded. The largest earthquake of the week, a magnitude M=2.6, occurred outside the caldera, in Round Valley. Five other events of magnitude M<2.0 occurred in the Sierras south of the caldera.
Another DI deflation started late last night and Kilauea eruptive activity continued at two locations.

Activity Update: All volcanoes in the Cascade Range are at normal levels of background seismicity. These include Mount Baker, Glacier Peak, Mount Rainier, Mount St. Helens, and Mount Adams in Washington State; Mount Hood, Mount Jefferson, Three Sisters, Newberry Volcano, and Crater Lake, in Oregon; and Medicine Lake volcano, Mount Shasta, and Lassen Peak in northern California.
Recent Observations: Activity at Cascade Range volcanoes remained at background levels this week.
Lava from the TEB vent is flowing through tubes that carry lava down-slope to feed active surface flows in two locations on the coastal plain:
(1) Geologic mapping this afternoon revealed minor activity on the north side of the lava that has been advancing toward Kalapana Gardens, with very little eastward expansion. A few scattered lava breakouts on the north side of the flow advanced up to 60 m (200 ft) in the past 24 hours, but most advanced less than 30 m (100 ft).
Lava continues to enter the ocean at two locations southwest of Kalapana Gardens, with ...
